Stain Guide: Blood

This is a 4th generation dry cleaner's guide for removing a blood stain!

What you need

Hydrogen Peroxide (3%)
All-purpose stain-remover spray (with the enzyme protease)
Powdered oxygen bleach

Steps

Rinse the stain with cold water as soon as possible.
Pretreat the stain with 3% hydrogen peroxide; this reaction should cause a white bubbling foam to appear.
Wash as recommended on the care label.
Inspect before tumble drying. If the stain was removed, dry as recommended on the care label; if not, follow step 5.
Pretreat the stain with the all-purpose stain remover (the enzyme needed to break down protein is protease). Allow the pretreatment to sit on the stain for at least 1 hour.
Wash as recommended on the care label.
If the stain remains, soak it in hot water and powdered oxygen bleach for at least 8 hours and then rewash OR spray the garment with 3% hydrogen peroxide and allow it to air-dry.
Rewash.

This is a dry cleaners guide to removing old blood stains. Thank you to my friends for constantly buying me heavily soiled garments to see if I can get them out! First, old blood stains will require hydrogen peroxide to break down the stain. I started with 12% and quickly moved to 35% since these were so incredibly bad. Quick shout out to bulk peroxide for hooking me up with some new peroxide concentrations ! Put a towel behind your stain to ensure the stain doesn’t transfer to another part of the garment. Then I treated the stains with an enzymatic stain remover since blood is a protein stain. Protein stains can be tricky but enzymes help break them down! I washed this garment on hot with laundry boosters (washing soda, baking soda, and sodium percarbonate) along with detergent. Then I soaked it overnight in hot hot water and powdered oxygen bleach and then rewashed. Pro Tip:

When hydrogen peroxide is poured onto blood, the hydrogen peroxide encounters blood and damaged skin cells. These contain an enzyme called catalase, which breaks down the hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen. The fizzing you see in the form of bubbles is the oxygen gas escaping. If a red stain does NOT bubble/foam it is probably not a blood stain (example: red wine or beets).
