Stain Guide: Smoke

This is a 4th generation dry cleaner's guide for removing a smoke stain!

What you need
  • Washing or baking soda
Steps
  1. Wipe or gently brush away any physical bits of the remaining stain (this will likely be ash or soot).
  2. Create a paste of equal parts water and washing or baking soda. Work this solution into the visibly stained areas and/or the areas with strong odors.
  3. Allow this pretreatment to sit for 15 minutes.
  4. Add ¼ cup of the washing or baking soda into the drum of your washing machine and wash as recommended on the care label.
  5. Inspect before drying. If the stain was removed, dry as recommended on the care label; if not, repeat steps 2 through 4.
  6. If the smoke odor and stain still remain, take your garment to a dry cleaner. Dry-cleaning solvent excels at removing ash, soot, and smoke stains. Dry cleaner’s also have access to ozone treatments, which excel at removing smoke odors.
